About Lisa from The Homesteading Way

In the kitchen, where my homesteading journey began

Hi, I’m Lisa. In 2017, my husband and I bought 5 wooded acres in northern Michigan and have been turning it into a working homestead ever since.

We started with laying hens and a small no-dig garden and soon added Nigerian Dwarf goats for dairy.

Then, we cleared 3.5 acres of trees, planted a permaculture orchard with 26 fruit trees and 34 fruiting shrubs, and established pastures and a bigger garden—where I grow many of the staples we eat most often, like tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and garlic.

But really, my homesteading journey started long before we had land or livestock animals.

I spent years learning how to cook from scratch, bake, grow herbs and veggies in pots, preserve what we had, and care for my family naturally—while homeschooling our two kids, who are now grown and in college.

This blog, The Homesteading Way, is where I share the simple, hands-on skills I’ve picked up along the way.

From sourdough and real food to backyard chickens and growing your own, these are the things that have helped shape a more meaningful, homemade, homegrown life.

I hope this blog inspires you to try a new recipe, grow your first veggie, or start raising animals—and find helpful printables along the way!
