About Lisa from The Homesteading Way

In the kitchen, where my homesteading journey began

Hi, I’m Lisa. In 2017, my husband and I bought 5 wooded acres in northern Michigan, and we’ve been slowly turning it into a working homestead ever since.

We started with a handful of laying hens and a small no-dig garden. Not long after, we brought home Nigerian Dwarf goats for dairy and added more chickens.

Over time, we cleared 3.5 acres of trees, planted a permaculture orchard with 26 fruit trees and 34 fruiting shrubs, and built pastures and a bigger garden—where I grow many of the staples we eat most often, like tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and garlic.

But really, my homesteading journey started long before we had land or livestock.

For years, I taught myself how to cook from scratch, grow herbs and veggies in pots, preserve what we had, and care for my family naturally—all while homeschooling our two kids (now grown and in college).

This blog, The Homesteading Way, is where I share the practical, hands-on skills I’ve picked up along the way.

From sourdough and simple meals to backyard chickens and growing your own food, these are the things that have helped me build a handmade, homegrown life.

I hope this blog inspires you to try a new recipe, grow your first veggie, start raising animals—or find just the right printable tool to support your journey.
