About Lisa from The Homesteading Way

In the kitchen, where my homesteading journey began

Hi, I’m Lisa. In 2017, my husband and I bought 5 wooded acres in northern Michigan and have been turning it into a working homestead ever since.

We started with laying hens and a small no-dig garden and soon added Nigerian dwarf goats. Then, we cleared 3.5 acres of trees, planted a permaculture orchard with 26 fruit trees and 34 fruiting shrubs, and established pastures and a bigger garden.

But my journey into homesteading began long before we had land or animals. For over a decade, I focused on cooking from scratch, baking, preserving food, homeschooling our two kids (now in college!), and using natural remedies—learning to make the most of what we had, no matter where we were.

Now, with nearly 20 years of experience, I created this blog to help you build skills that bring joy, freedom, and connection to what really matters.

Every tip, guide, and recipe I post is tested on our homestead and rooted in practical experience.

Thanks for stopping by! Let’s grow, create, and build a simpler, more intentional life together—one skill at a time.
