I’ve been raising Nigerian dwarf goats naturally for the past 4 years. Throughout this time, I’ve managed to keep my herd healthy and thriving without issues like parasites, mites, breeding problems, or other common health problems.

My approach is simple: provide a healthy diet and the right environment. I’ve learned that goat management really comes down to these two things.

To help others just starting out, I created the Natural Goat Care Checklist. In fact, I hand this out to everyone who buys goats from me!

Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Care Overview

The checklist covers essential tasks to keep your goats in top shape. Daily tasks include:

  • Checking body condition and behavior: Regular checks help catch potential health issues early.
  • Providing fresh water and hay: Make sure your goats always have access to clean water and hay off the ground.
  • Managing waste: Rake or sweep up poop in areas where goats spend most of their time to maintain cleanliness.

Weekly, you’ll focus on:

  • Bedding replacement: Remove soiled bedding and replace it with fresh materials to keep the goats comfortable.
  • Pen cleaning: Regularly clean larger pen and play areas to reduce the risk of disease.
  • Providing extra supplements: Add supplements like apple cider vinegar and raw garlic to their diet.

And Monthly:

  • Hoof care: Trim hooves as needed, typically every 4-8 weeks, to prevent hoof problems.

Feeding and Supplements

Proper nutrition is key to raising healthy goats. The checklist includes recommendations for:

  • Hay: Provide grass hay for wethers, bucks, dry does, and kids. Use legume hay or a legume/grass mix for pregnant or nursing does.
  • Browsing: Allow goats to browse on small trees and shrubs or provide cut branches if they can’t roam freely.
  • Rotational grazing: Move goats to new pasture areas once the grass gets below 6 inches high to prevent parasite issues.
  • Essential minerals and supplements: Offer loose, goat-specific minerals like Sweetlix ‘MeatMaker’ or Purina. Additionally, provide kelp mixed with herbs and baking soda free choice.
